Holistic Healing Protocol: Mycoplasma Pneumonia, a common co-infection of Lyme

Uncovering the Hidden Infection: Mycoplasma and the Buhner Protocol

If you’ve been diagnosed with Lyme disease—or even just suspect it—there’s a high likelihood that you’re also dealing with co-infections, whether you realize it or not. One of the most common and often overlooked is Mycoplasma.

While I may have gotten over my Lyme disease, I still had a lingering co-infection. Mycoplasma is a stealth pathogen—small, cell-wall deficient, and incredibly difficult to detect on standard bloodwork. Yet it can cause debilitating symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, lung inflammation, hormonal disruption, and immune dysregulation. It affects the ears, throat, lymphatic system and more. Many people suffering from chronic Lyme unknowingly have a latent or active Mycoplasma infection driving their symptoms.

This was certainly the case for me.

When I began addressing Mycoplasma specifically, things began to shift—very, very slowly but eventually. I turned to the Stephen Buhner protocol—a well-researched, plant-based approach known for its effectiveness in treating chronic bacterial infections, especially those that conventional medicine struggles to eradicate.

Buhner’s protocol works by:

  • Inhibiting bacterial reproduction

  • Disrupting biofilms, which bacteria use to hide from the immune system

  • Reducing inflammation caused by the infection

  • Modulating immune function so the body can respond more effectively

  • Protecting tissues damaged by long-term infection (especially the lungs, joints, and nervous system)

    Why I Chose Woodland Essence’s Myco-Formula

When I decided to begin addressing Mycoplasma with herbs, I chose to use Woodland Essence’s Myco-Formula—a trusted blend based on Stephen Buhner’s protocol. I picked this formula because it combines several of the key herbs he recommends for targeting Mycoplasma infections, all in one carefully crafted tincture.

    Woodland Essence’s Myco-Formula contains:

    • Cordyceps – to support lung function, restore energy, and modulate immune response

    • Isatis root – for antiviral and antibacterial activity, particularly against respiratory pathogens

    • Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis) – a potent anti-inflammatory and broad-spectrum antimicrobial that helps protect nerves and tissues

    • Licorice root – for adrenal support, gut lining repair, and added antimicrobial action

    • Eleuthero (Siberian ginseng) – to strengthen immunity and improve resilience during long-term illness

The synergy of these herbs makes it an incredibly effective yet gentle option for people dealing with Mycoplasma, Lyme, and related co-infections. For someone like me—who has to go slow and work carefully with the body’s rhythms—it felt like the right choice.

How I Titrate Herbs (and Why It Matters)

Because I’m extremely sensitive to tinctures, I always start slow and low—just a few drops per day—and increase gradually based on how my body responds. If I start feeling overwhelmed, detox-y, or too taxed, I pause, reduce the dose, or take a break entirely.

Herbs are powerful medicine, and healing is not a race. Listening to your body and adjusting as needed is a key part of working with plant medicine safely and effectively. I found this protocol not only tolerable but incredibly effective when used consistently and alongside detox and lymph support.
